Practical Engineering Testing and Certification in the Oil and Gas Industry

Testing and certification is a key part of keeping work sites, staff members and contractors safe whilst operating on Australia’s oil and gas fields. The ‘golden rule’ of testing is that if a piece of equipment can kill or harm someone, cause financial loss, or if it is in any way dangerous, it’s worth getting it looked at.

Drilling equipment, lifting beams, mobile and vehicle loading cranes, pressure vessels and dangerous goods tankers are just a few examples of things that might require testing and/or certification on an oil and gas field.

At Practical Engineering, we have the capacity to undertake a wide range of hydrostatic testing both out in the field or in-house. With an in depth understanding of pressure vessels and high-pressure pipework, we have expanded our testing division to make our hydrostatic test rig fully mobile. The mobile testing rig is specifically designed to service the gas fields west of Brisbane with high pressure pipework and vessels across the rig sites. Our test kit is capable of testing pressure up to 15,000 psi. Our computer program tracks and logs the pressure and with this data we can produce a detailed report for our clients.

Practical also has the skills required to undertake compression and tensile testing and our testing lab includes a 100t capacity tensile test rig. Testing data is logged and displayed via a software interface. The tensile test rig measures the force applied to the test piece to yield and onto destruction. For each test performed, we issue a test witness report outlining the findings of the test and displaying all results in graphed/tabled format.

Practical has the expertise required to load test any lifting beam. By conducting a complete survey of the beam then conducting finite element analysis (FEA) supported by a physical load test, we can provide a new certification for aged equipment.

With our extensive range of experience and testing equipment along with CPEng, RPEQ and NER qualified engineers, we can test anything our clients throw at us. Where Australian Standards apply, we are qualified to certify and where the standard requires a physical test, we have the capacity to develop and conduct physical testing.
